Glomar Acquires Full Control: Rederij Groen Buyout Sets Course for Growth

Dutch offshore support vessel giant Glomar has sealed a significant deal, acquiring full ownership of compatriot company Rederij Groen. The move follows Rederij Groen’s initial 50% stake in Glomar back in 2016, with both companies opting to pursue individual strategies. Glomar’s CEO and founder, Klaas Weij, established Seaspan Holding, a key player in this transaction.

Financial details of the buyout remain undisclosed. Klaas Weij, along with stakeholders Mevlin Weij and Dennis Beintema, have assumed control, empowering Glomar to steer strategic decisions independently.

Weij emphasized, “The buy-out of Rederij Groen enables us to have full control of our strategic decisions and provides a solid base for further growth and innovation.” This move positions Glomar to concentrate on fortifying market standing, enhancing customer service, and expanding its product range.

The integration between Seaspan and Glomar encompasses the management of Seaspan’s vessels, now under Glomar’s wing. Seaspan’s existing fleet, coupled with two newbuilds scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 2025, will be seamlessly incorporated.

Additionally, Glomar has ambitious plans for its standby fleet, gradually implementing IMO Tier III systems. Initiatives like Glomar 4-Winds and Glomar Venture, set to kick off in the first quarter of 2024, underscore Glomar’s commitment to sustainability.

Klaas Weij shared his perspective, stating, “The integration of the Seaspan fleet marks an important milestone for the company. This will enable us to accelerate our growth targets and continue to deliver the best services to our customers.” The strategy positions Glomar as a frontrunner in survey vessel offerings, with innovative plans for two smaller DP-II vessels, showcasing the company’s out-of-the-box approach.

This acquisition not only propels Glomar to new heights of autonomy but also signals a strategic shift towards sustainability, cementing its role as a market leader in the maritime domain.
