Mammoet has delivered a major vote of confidence in the Teesside economy by unveiling its new £7m facility.
Dutch multi-national Mammoet is moving into a 30,000sq ft base on Teesside Estate and is forecasting growth of 50% in coming years.
The six-acre plant in Thornaby will be the new home for more than 180 of Mammoet UK’s employees
The workforce will include the 140 who currently work from Billingham and 36 Leeds staff.
Matthew Gent, Mammoet UK managing director, said: “This is a significant, long-term, investment in our business and people that emphasises just how important the UK market and customer base is to the global Mammoet company.”
Mammoet is Dutch for Mammoth and employs more than 5,000 people in 82 offices in 31 countries. The company arrived in the UK in 1989 and expanded to Teesside in 2002. The new location has storage, workshop space, training facilities, testing areas and offices and will provide opportunity to grow.
Mr Gent said: “Significant opportunities exist in the UK in relation to major petrochemical, oil and gas, power, nuclear and infrastructure projects and we have the expertise to match that demand. “We foresee further expansion of the UK business of up to 50%.
This new facility will allow us to meet anything that comes our way and have a base, a home, from which we can deal with it.” In addition to investing £7.2m the new facility, Mammoet has spent £26m in the past three years on new mobile cranes and specialist project equipment.
UK Land Estates owns Teesside Estate, formerly known as Teesside Industrial Estate, and has overseen a number of recent key developments, including the opening of a retail parade. Road improvements have also been carried out, including a new roundabout from the A174.
Tim Witty, development director at UK Land Estates, said: “We have made an investment in excess of £15m in the Teesside Estate in the past 10 years and it is pleasing to see that we are attracting brands such as Cavotec and now Mammoet.
“Mammoet now have a 30,000 sq ft modern building sitting in a six-acre site. The recent road improvements mean it will be relatively easy for their large cranes to be taken in and out of the estate and they are well equipped for further expansion.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and Stockton Council chief executive Neil Schneider welcomed the investment.
Mr Houchen said: “This massive £7.2m investment is fantastic news for local people. This is a clear vote of confidence in our local economy by a growing multi-national who are committed to Teesside and its workforce. It’s clear we are an attractive area to significant global firms.”
Mr Schneider added the council was “delighted” that an international company like Mammoet has chosen to invest and establish a base in Stockton borough alongside a growing number of companies providing many jobs.
