Revitalizing Dutch Maritime Industry: No Guts, No Hollands Glorie!

The Netherlands, a maritime nation with a legacy deeply rooted in conquering the seas, faces a critical juncture as its global market share in commercial ships dwindles to a mere 4%. In a compelling message, Marja van Bijsterveldt-Vliegenthart, the Gezant Sectoragenda Maritieme Maakindustrie, emphasizes the need for strategic action to reclaim the nation’s maritime prowess.

Van Bijsterveldt-Vliegenthart begins by acknowledging the historical strength of the Dutch maritime industry, framing it as the essence of “Hollands Glorie.” Despite this, a gradual decline has seen Asia, particularly China, taking over a significant portion of the global market share in commercial ships.

The situation is compared to a precarious Jenga tower, warning that if swift action is not taken, the entire structure could collapse. The Gezant stresses the urgency of reassessing laissez-faire policies and securing the nation’s vital interests, including energy transition, flood prevention, military security, vital sea infrastructure, and economic viability.

The agenda sets ambitious goals, urging the Netherlands to design, build, and maintain diverse types of ships, emphasizing the construction of naval vessels for security and specialized work and dredging ships for energy transition and vital infrastructure. The call is for a paradigm shift, with 25 identified challenges addressed through five action lines, aiming at a stronger presence in government procurement, improved financing conditions, sustained innovation, enhanced business climate, and a robust international position.

Highlighting the importance of large industrial companies, the Gezant cautions against underestimating their social impact, citing the extensive network of local businesses, employment, knowledge development, and financial stability they provide.

The agenda’s practical implementation involves collaborative efforts, both within the government and the maritime sector. A crucial development is the establishment of a Rijksregiebureau Maritieme Maakindustrie, consolidating the strength and knowledge of relevant ministries.

As the Gezant concludes her tenure, she expresses gratitude for the collective effort in shaping the agenda, signaling the need for continuity. A call to preserve and cherish the nation’s businesses, small and large, resonates as the sector navigates towards a maritime renaissance.
