Jumbo Shipping, SAL Heavy Lift, and Intermarine Form JSI Alliance: A New Force in Maritime Heavy Lift

Dutch firm Jumbo Shipping, German specialist SAL Heavy Lift, and American operator Intermarine are set to launch a powerful collaboration – the JSI Alliance. This strategic partnership marks the amalgamation of three industry giants, combining their fleets and commercial activities for breakbulk and project cargo.

On March 1, 2024, JSI Alliance will embark on a new venture with a combined fleet of 50 vessels, encompassing a range from versatile multipurpose ships to state-of-the-art heavy lifters boasting a lifting capacity of up to 3,000 tons SWL.

Intermarine’s President, Richard Seeg, expresses enthusiasm about this significant move, highlighting the potential to expand services and reach, especially in the Americas. The formation of JSI Alliance represents a leap forward from previous cooperation, creating a unified commercial entry point for their extensive network of offices and agents across 23 countries.

Laurens Govers, Director Chartering & Projects at Jumbo Shipping, reflects on the success of the initial collaboration between Jumbo and SAL, expressing confidence that the wider service scope of JSI Alliance will add significant value to their platform. The new constellation promises a one-stop shop for customers seeking diverse maritime breakbulk or project transport solutions.

JSI Alliance is positioned as a symbol of both commercial flexibility and technical excellence, providing semi-liner and liner services alongside customized project shipping solutions globally. The combined strength of Jumbo, SAL, and Intermarine ensures a broad spectrum of options for customers, ranging from straightforward transport solutions for small parcels to handling complex industrial cargo units.

The addition of Intermarine’s fleet, known for its standardized multipurpose vessels, complements the existing Jumbo and SAL portfolio. Intermarine’s COO, Lars Rasmussen, emphasizes the uniqueness of the commercial solution, combining various vessels and service scopes to handle anything from standard multipurpose ships to heavy lifters and bulk vessels under a single operational and management umbrella.

JSI Alliance brings together a wealth of experience, boasting a combined history of over 120 years among its three members. While the fleets and service scopes differ, the unified culture and values shared by Jumbo, SAL, and Intermarine form a solid foundation for this close-knit commercial structure.

SAL Heavy Lift Managing Director Jens Baumgarten underscores the commitment to customer satisfaction, believing that the added value created for customers will foster long-term relationships. JSI Alliance replaces the Jumbo-SAL-Alliance as the unified marketing platform and brand, while each company remains independent as operators and owners in the market.

Intermarine CEO Svend Andersen emphasizes JSI Alliance as the pinnacle of commercial innovation in heavy lift shipping, confident that the collaboration’s strengths will outmatch any other operator in the market. All sales offices are immediately unified under JSI Alliance, with back-office support functions contributing to an organization that maximizes synergies between the entities.

Daan Koornneef, CEO of Jumbo Shipping, expresses satisfaction with the effective integration of the three organizations, building on the success of the former Jumbo-SAL-Alliance. Dr. Martin Harren, CEO of SAL Heavy Lift and Harren Group, echoes this sentiment, marking JSI Alliance as a new cornerstone for their business, emphasizing the necessity of remaining agile and seizing opportunities.
