SOMALEV Powers into 2024 with Dakhla Wind Project after Delivering 200MW in 2023

SOMALEV CRANES & LOGISTICS, Morocco’s leading wind farm assembly specialist, successfully installed over 200MW of wind power capacity in 2023. The national champion in heavy lifting engineering, handling, industrial transfer, and exceptional transport, SOMALEV played a crucial role in enhancing the country’s integration of renewable energy.

The final touch to this stellar performance came with the completion of the lifting and assembly engineering work for the KOUDIA EL BAIDA wind farm by installing the last turbine blade of the 20 turbines before the close of 2023. Mr. Mamoun HSAINE, Deputy Managing Director in charge of the wind business unit, praised the efforts of the qualified and experienced Moroccan team, highlighting their expertise in handling more than 10,000 tonnes of equipment, often lifted to heights of almost 100 meters in challenging and windy conditions.

“We faced a great challenge, made possible by the confidence of our customers, our specialized team, and the substantial investments we’ve made over the years in our equipment,” HSAINE remarked.

The project utilized two of the largest crawler cranes in the country, a LR1750-2 SX and a CC2800-1NT, as the main cranes, supported by three teams of auxiliary and unloading cranes with capacities ranging from 100 to 500 tonnes. The entire team holds certifications to GWO standards, ensuring a high level of workplace safety.

With a cumulative investment of over 100 million dirhams in human and material resources, SOMALEV has solidified its position in the industry. The completion of the Aftissat II project near Boujdour in Q1 2023 and the first phase of the TAZA wind farm further underscores SOMALEV’s commitment to heavy logistics engineering.

As a 100% Moroccan company, SOMALEV aims to support the Kingdom’s sovereignty in implementing structural projects, providing a local alternative with substantial investments in both human and material resources. The company has its eyes set on expanding its reach to wind farm projects in Spain, Italy, Egypt, and Tunisia, signaling its ambition to compete beyond national borders.

SOMALEV’s CEO, Mohamed Moufid, emphasized their commitment to the national energy strategy, seeing it as an opportunity for Morocco’s industrial growth by guaranteeing the efficient operation of wind power facilities. Notably, SOMALEV acquired a 51% stake in the Turkish company WIND ON in 2023, specializing in electrical and mechanical installation and O&M contract management.
