UECC Leads Collaboration to Promote CNSL as Sustainable Marine Fuel

United European Car Carriers (UECC) has initiated a pioneering collaboration with key industry players to evaluate Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) as a viable marine fuel. Partnering with renowned entities like Lloyd’s Register FOBAS, Wartsila, and biofuel supplier ACT Group, UECC is at the forefront of assessing CNSL’s potential in marine applications.

ACT Group’s creation of FSI.100, a CNSL-based biofuel, stands as a testament to the commitment to innovation and sustainability. With extensive engine testing and a meticulously managed supply chain, FSI.100 earned UECC’s trust. This collaboration led to the approval of FSI.100 as a 30% blend component in an ISO 8217 DMA grade distillate fuel oil, a significant breakthrough in sustainable marine fuels.

FSI.100 addresses concerns regarding CNSL-based biofuels’ viability and popularity. It boasts a certified sustainable supply chain, ensuring traceability from extraction to consumption. This approach aligns with circular economy principles, promoting resource efficiency and waste reduction. Additionally, FSI.100 exhibits high-quality maritime fuel properties and delivers substantial greenhouse gas savings, with emissions reductions of up to 90% compared to conventional fuels.

UECC underscores the importance of thorough evaluation and transparency in sustainable fuel procurement, especially in light of recent incidents highlighting operational challenges. By collaborating with industry leaders, UECC aims to address these issues and set standards for sustainable shipping practices.

Daniel Gent, UECC’s Energy & Sustainability Manager, emphasizes the significance of this collaborative effort, stating, “In our decarbonization journey, it’s essential to leave no stone unturned.” Gent applauds UECC’s role in pioneering innovative solutions and establishing a blueprint for evaluating future fuels like CNSL-based FSI.100.

The joint efforts between UECC, LR FOBAS, Wartsila, and ACT Group have led to structured processes, including extensive engine testing and analytical assessments. This diligent approach reflects UECC’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.

The provisional acceptance of FSI.100 as a blend component in marine fuel oil marks a significant milestone for the maritime industry. This achievement underscores the importance of transparency and rigorous evaluation in sustainable fuel adoption.

Fabio Scaramelli, leading the biofuels supply and trading division at ACT Group, expresses enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Our partnership represents a significant step forward in advancing CNSL-based biofuels.” Scaramelli highlights FSI.100’s role in the sector’s decarbonization journey.

UECC urges industry stakeholders to prioritize collaboration and transparency in sustainable shipping solutions. With concerted efforts, the maritime industry can navigate toward a more sustainable future.
