Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal (ZMT) Officially Launched, Boosting Trade and Economic Growth

The President of the Republic of Zanzibar, H.E. Hussein Mwinyi, officially inaugurated the Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal (ZMT). The ceremony, attended by Philippe Labonne, President of AGL (Africa Global Logistics), Zanzibar political authorities, and Nahaat Mahfoud, Director General of Zanzibar Ports Corporation, marked the formal commencement of operations at the terminal. Developed by AGL, the ZMT aims to serve the one million residents of the Zanzibar archipelago.

The management contract for ZMT, signed on May 18, 2023, following a competitive tender process, positions the country to possess a competitive infrastructure. Leveraging AGL’s extensive port experience, the terminal will handle imports and exports with a commitment to quality, security, and safety in line with international standards. With the support of the MSC Group, of which AGL is a member, ZMT is poised to enhance trade fluidity in the region, bolster Zanzibar’s attractiveness, and catalyze the country’s economic development.

Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal has outlined an investment plan, including the construction of an external unloading area to alleviate congestion at the Malindi port. Additionally, there will be renovations and upgrades to infrastructure and equipment, aimed at increasing the volume of goods processed at the Malindi port.

Nicolas Escalin, the General Manager of ZMT, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in AGL by the Zanzibari authorities. He highlighted the dedication of the teams and the deployment of new tools since the commencement of operations on September 18, 2023, aiming to enhance the productivity of the Malindi port. With the support of 400 direct collaborators, Escalin is confident that the port will significantly contribute to the local economy.

Featuring a 240-meter quay with a draft of 11 meters, the port aligns with a local development strategy that will positively impact surrounding communities. Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal is committed to a training program for its employees and will develop an action plan to improve the terminal’s environmental footprint.
