Sarens Drives Breakthrough in Waste Management: Hong Kong’s First Integrated Facility Gets a Lift

In a monumental stride towards sustainable waste management, Sarens, the heavy lift specialist, has taken center stage at Hong Kong’s groundbreaking Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) Phase 1. The venture marks a crucial juncture in the city’s waste management strategy, with the facility poised to slash waste volume by over 90%, effectively prolonging landfill lifespan. The collaboration underscores the pivotal role of maritime, breakbulk, project cargo, and logistics sectors in steering green innovations.

The IWMF, spearheaded by Keppel Seghers Hong Kong Limited (Keppel Seghers HK) and Zhen Hua Engineering Co. Ltd. (Zhen Hua), represents a revolutionary leap in waste management. Nestled off the Shek Kwu Chau coast, the facility is set to revolutionize Hong Kong’s approach to municipal solid waste. The dynamic partnership secured the design, construction, and operation of this pioneering facility, poised to be a blueprint for eco-friendly waste management globally.

Sarens, entrusted with the monumental task, deftly handled the intricate choreography of the project. The heavy lift maestros facilitated the transport of 17 colossal modules from China’s fabrication yard to the Hong Kong installation site. The logistics ballet encompassed a meticulously orchestrated interplay of equipment, time, and cost management, a symphony conducted with precision.

Envision the staggering scale: 216 axle-lines of SPMTs, 32 weighing jacks, a 140m semi-submersible barge, and a 120m flatdeck barge. This armada orchestrated a seamless ballet, ferrying a diverse range of modules, including six 6000T prefabricated units, six 2500T counterparts, and five maximal 500T modules. Each transport leg was a symphony of engineering finesse, culminating in a mesmerizing dance on the newly-minted artificial island in Hong Kong waters.

Heather Crockett, the Project Manager, reflected on the complexities of the endeavor. “The quay arrangement’s variability on the reclaimed site was a formidable challenge,” she shared. This challenge, however, was met with calculated dexterity, with every move of the SPMTs meticulously choreographed and flawlessly executed.

Dirk Verwimp, Sarens Senior Sales Advisor, radiated pride in the company’s pivotal role in this transformative endeavor. “Sarens is a vanguard of sustainability, steadfastly propelling change through projects and equipment,” Verwimp expressed, adding, “Our contribution to Hong Kong’s inaugural waste management facility stands as a testament to our commitment.”

As Hong Kong’s inaugural integrated waste management facility emerges from the sea, Sarens’ instrumental role in this ecological odyssey shines as a beacon of innovation. A convergence of visionary partnerships, engineering prowess, and logistical finesse is charting a greener course for waste management, with Sarens orchestrating a harmonious interplay of weight, water, and waste.
